Leaked Nvidia DLSS 5 code lets modders apply AI upscaling to older games

Modders have extracted Nvidia's DLSS 5 code from an early build of NBA 2K27 and are applying it to other games like Control and Skyrim. The unofficial version enables AI-based neural rendering effects that alter character details and textures. Videos show dramatic changes to facial features when toggling settings.
The leaked code originated from an early-access build of NBA 2K27, where it was discovered by members of the RenoDX modding Discord channel. They extracted the Neural Rendering component and successfully applied it to Control first, then expanded to other titles including Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, GTA: San Andreas, Palworld, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The mod's Neural Uplift setting dramatically alters character facial geometry, shadow intensity, and environmental lighting when toggled between presets.
Performance costs are significant, with one user reporting the mod halves frame rates in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and consumes substantial VRAM when switching presets. Another demonstration showed frames dropping from 90 to 29 FPS in GTA V. While initially requiring RTX 50-series hardware, modders have since achieved compatibility with RTX 4090 and 4080 cards. Nvidia officially announced DLSS 5 in March, showcasing it in Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield, and Hogwarts Legacy.
This leak could accelerate public exposure to neural rendering before Nvidia's official rollout, potentially shaping player expectations and skepticism. Gamers may face a divide between those embracing enhanced visual fidelity and those dismissing the effect as artificial "AI slop." Hardware owners without RTX 50-series cards could feel excluded from the technology's benefits, while modders' success on older GPUs may pressure Nvidia to broaden compatibility. The mixed reception suggests the technology's real-world appeal remains unproven outside controlled demonstrations.
