Court to Review Recantation Claim in Sandusky Abuse Case
A Pennsylvania judge has scheduled a hearing for September 8 to consider a man's request to withdraw his testimony against former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky. The man, identified as RR, alleges that investigators coached him and other accusers, but the state attorney general's office dismisses the recantation as highly suspect. Sandusky, 82, has been imprisoned since his 2012 conviction on 45 counts of sexual abuse.
RR, who was 25 when he testified at trial, said he was 11 when the alleged abuse occurred in Sandusky's basement in 1998. He was in foster care at the time and testified that Sandusky threatened he would never see his family again if he disclosed the abuse. Sandusky later apologized and said he loved him, according to trial transcripts.
The hearing is set for September 8 in Centre County. Sandusky's attorneys argue that suggestive questioning and prosecutorial coercion affected all the accusers. The university paid over $100 million to individuals who reported abuse, and the scandal led to head coach Joe Paterno's firing. Sandusky has maintained his innocence throughout his imprisonment.
