TheaterEars app revives director's commentary for big-screen Terminator 2
Terminator 2 is back in theaters for its 35th anniversary, and TheaterEars is offering James Cameron's director's commentary through its app during the run. The service, originally built for Spanish-language dubs, has expanded to include classic and new commentaries. TheaterEars CEO Dan Magru says the goal is to revive the home-viewing tradition in a theatrical setting.
TheaterEars began as a translation tool, debuting with a Spanish-language dub for Pixar’s *Coco* in 2017, and now claims roughly 4 million users across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Its commentary expansion taps into a home-viewing tradition that dates to Criterion’s 1984 LaserDisc of *King Kong*, later popularized on DVDs—though such tracks have grown rare. The app syncs to the film via microphone, forces headphone use, and blacks out the phone screen to avoid disturbing neighbors. Cameron’s *Terminator 2* commentary runs through September 2, with additional tracks for *La La Land* and other titles planned.
This service could subtly shift theater etiquette, normalizing phone use during screenings if executed discreetly—potentially easing tensions for audiences who value commentary but dislike distractions. It may also extend the commercial life of re-releases, giving studios a low-cost incentive for anniversary runs. However, its reliance on personal audio risks isolating viewers from the shared experience, and success depends on whether theaters and patrons accept a hybrid of home and cinema habits.
