Overnight Blasts Rock Niamey Near Airport Base

Residents in Niger's capital reported heavy gunfire and explosions overnight near Base 101, adjacent to the international airport that has been attacked twice this year by jihadist groups. Witnesses confirmed the sounds, and social media showed armored vehicles moving into the area, though the cause remains unclear and no official statement has been released. The airport was previously targeted by Islamic State in the Sahel in January and by Al-Qaeda-linked JNIM in late June.

The overnight incident marks the third time this year that violence has erupted near Niamey's airport complex. Base 101, adjacent to the international airport, was struck in January by Islamic State in the Sahel, killing 20 assailants and wounding four soldiers, and again in late June by JNIM, the Al-Qaeda affiliate, which left 11 soldiers and two civilians dead.

Niger has been under military rule since the July 2023 coup led by General Abdourahamane Tiani. The junta, alongside counterparts in Burkina Faso and Mali, has withdrawn from ECOWAS and shifted away from Western security partners toward Russia, yet jihadist violence persists across the region. No official statement has been issued regarding the latest gunfire.
