Qantas moves up A380 phase-out, reveals premium cabin for Dreamliners
Qantas has decided to begin grounding its Airbus A380 fleet in 2028, four years ahead of its previous schedule. The airline also introduced new business-class seats for its upcoming Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The move comes as Qantas takes delivery of new long-haul aircraft.
The retirement timeline shift reflects a broader industry trend away from four-engine aircraft toward more efficient twin-engine models. Qantas's 2023 order for 12 A350s and 12 Dreamliners forms the backbone of its fleet renewal, with 17 aircraft arriving this year and 31 more expected in 2027. The airline currently operates 10 A380s on routes including Los Angeles–Sydney, Los Angeles–Melbourne, and Dallas–Sydney, each configured with 485 seats, a first-class cabin, and 70 business pods.
The new 787-9 business suites mark a significant product upgrade, introducing sliding privacy doors for the first time on Qantas's Dreamliner fleet. Passengers will enjoy 80-inch lie-flat beds, wider footwells, and 19-inch entertainment screens. These enhancements arrive as fuel price surges in 2026 make the fuel-hungry A380 increasingly costly to operate, with Airbus having ceased production of the superjumbo in 2021.
This shift could affect frequent long-haul travelers who value the A380's spaciousness and rare first-class cabin, potentially losing access to that premium experience on Qantas routes. Business travelers may benefit from improved privacy and comfort on Dreamliners, while the airline's accelerated fleet modernization could influence ticket pricing and route availability. As other carriers follow similar retirement paths, the global A380 flying experience may become increasingly exclusive, concentrated mainly with Emirates.
