Satellite tracking maps precise journeys of endangered eagles across Asia and Africa
A new study using GPS tags has documented the migration paths of steppe and booted eagles along the East Asia–East Africa Flyway, a route crossing over 60 countries. The research, led by a University of Utah undergraduate, is the first satellite tracking of booted eagles in this corridor. It highlights dangers such as power lines, habitat loss, and climate pressures faced by these raptors.
The tracking data reveals stark contrasts in how the two raptor species navigate the same flyway. The booted eagle covered roughly 5,080 kilometers in 49 days on its autumn journey to Uganda, then pushed farther—nearly 6,786 kilometers—on a faster 35-day spring return to Russian breeding grounds. The steppe eagle, confiscated from poachers by Turkish authorities, took a less typical path through the Suez Canal rather than the usual Bab al-Mandeb crossing, before its signal vanished in Sudan.
This study marks the first satellite documentation of booted eagles in this corridor, a region where over 330 bird species face mounting pressures. The research emerged from the Aras River Ornithological Station in northeastern Turkey, a site that continues to yield critical migration data. The steppe eagle's fate remains unknown—its tag may have detached, or the bird may have perished—underscoring how much remains uncertain even with precise tracking technology.
This research could sharpen conservation priorities along a flyway spanning more than 60 countries, where threats like power-line collisions and habitat loss are poorly mapped for many species. Precise route data may help governments and NGOs target infrastructure upgrades or protected areas more effectively. The study also demonstrates that undergraduate-led research can produce meaningful scientific contributions, potentially inspiring broader participation in field biology and influencing how funding agencies weigh early-career investigations.
