Sooners Seek Efficient Offense in Season Opener Against UTEP

Oklahoma is heavily favored against UTEP, but needs to show improvement in rushing efficiency and quarterback accuracy. Last year's opener exposed issues that persisted all season. The Sooners aim to establish a strong ground game and accurate passing before facing Michigan.

Oklahoma's ground game managed just 103 yards on 3.2 yards per carry in last year's opener against Illinois State, a performance that proved prophetic for a season-long rushing struggle. UTEP ranked 97th nationally against the run in 2025, surrendering 169.5 yards per game, while Texas piled up 226 yards on the ground against the Miners. The Sooners' target is 4.5 yards per carry.

Quarterback John Mateer threw for 392 yards and three touchdowns in last year's opener but dealt with a hand injury that hampered his accuracy late in 2025. He's now healthy, and the Sooners added transfer receivers Parker Livingstone and Trell Harris to complement Isaiah Sategna. The center position remains unsettled with Jake Maikkula absent.
