Zaporizhzhia nuclear station relies on diesel as blackout persists
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been without external electricity for more than a week, forcing it to depend on emergency diesel generators. The International Atomic Energy Agency warned that the on-site diesel supply may last only ten days. This marks the 27th such outage since Russia's full-scale invasion began.
The Zaporizhzhia facility has not produced electricity since September 2022, yet its six reactors still require continuous cooling to prevent fuel meltdown. The IAEA maintains a permanent observer team at the site, which sits along the Dnipro River near the active front line. Recent drone activity near the plant injured two workers, following an earlier strike that killed one specialist and wounded seventeen others.
The plant's diesel reserves have been partially replenished from an off-site location, though deliveries from its primary storage facility have been suspended for roughly six months. IAEA officials are seeking a localized ceasefire to enable repairs to damaged power lines, marking the 27th external power failure since the invasion began.
A prolonged blackout at Europe's largest nuclear plant could create cascading risks beyond Ukraine's borders. If diesel reserves deplete before power is restored, cooling system failure could lead to radioactive release, potentially affecting regional agriculture, public health, and cross-border evacuation planning. The recurring outages may also heighten international pressure on both sides to establish protective zones around the facility, while neighboring countries could face renewed anxiety about nuclear safety and energy infrastructure resilience.
