Cameron tops Mayer to unify super-welterweight titles in Birmingham
Chantelle Cameron defeated Mikaela Mayer by unanimous decision in Birmingham to unify the WBA, WBC and WBO super-welterweight titles. The 35-year-old Englishwoman won 97-93, 97-93, 96-94, improving her record to 23-1. The victory gave the UK a 4-1 win over the US on the MVPW-06 card.
Cameron's victory caps a rapid rise through the weights, having only moved up to super-welterweight earlier this year after claiming the vacant WBO belt against Michaela Kotaskova in April. She previously reigned as undisputed super-lightweight champion and remains the lone professional conqueror of Katie Taylor, splitting their 2023 rivalry. Mayer, a 2016 U.S. Olympian and three-weight champion, has now lost all three professional bouts on English soil, following defeats to Alycia Baumgardner and Natasha Jonas. Both fighters hold rematch clauses, and Cameron has already expressed interest in a second meeting with three-minute rounds.
This unification bout could reshape the super-welterweight landscape, with Cameron now holding three of four major belts and only IBF champion Oshae Jones standing between her and undisputed status. The result may also boost the visibility of women's boxing in the UK, particularly through Jake Paul's promotional series, which continues to draw mainstream attention. For Mayer, the loss raises questions about her trajectory at 36, though her rematch clause offers an immediate path back to contention.
