Valentine Poised for Breakout Season as Illini Lead Back

Junior running back Ca'Lil Valentine enters 2026 after leading Illinois in rushing last season, showcasing a blend of lateral agility, vision, and patience. He excels in open space but is not a power back in short-yardage situations, and his pass protection remains a work in progress. With experience and added bulk, he is expected to take another step forward.

Valentine's path to the lead role was gradual. As a freshman in 2024, he worked behind a crowded backfield featuring Kaden Feagin, Josh McCray, and Aidan Laughery, still managing 53 carries for 212 yards. By 2025, he had overtaken those veterans, and with Feagin now converted to tight end, the backfield is clearly his alongside Laughery.

His 2025 production — 614 yards on 131 carries at 4.7 per attempt — came despite inconsistent offensive line play. At 205 pounds, he has added bulk but remains better suited to space than short-yardage grinding. He also caught 10 passes for 55 yards, and his pass protection remains an area of focus heading into his junior season.
