Warming-driven glacier instability likely sparked deadly Nepal flood

The event underscores how rapidly mountain ice is vanishing worldwide. Global glacier mass has dropped 5 percent since 2000, but Nepal has been hit far harder, losing roughly a quarter of its glacier area between 1970 and 2010. More than 160 smaller glaciers in the country have disappeared completely, according to research cited in the report.
Geographer Joseph Shea noted that while substantial ice remains in the region, it is thinning and retreating steadily. This instability makes catastrophic events like Wednesday's flood increasingly plausible, as warming weakens the structures that hold glacier ice in place on steep Himalayan slopes.
