Yankees rookie shortstop leaves doubleheader with right knee issue

George Lombard Jr. twisted his right knee while swinging at an inside fastball in the second inning of Saturday's game against Boston. He remained in the contest initially but was removed before the fourth inning and is scheduled for imaging at a hospital. The 21-year-old has started every game since joining the Yankees on Aug. 4, batting .253 with two home runs.

The injury occurred on an awkward swing at a pitch that came inside but did not make contact. Lombard initially remained in the contest, even delivering a single on the following pitch, yet was pulled before the fourth frame. The Yankees shifted José Caballero to shortstop and inserted Amed Rosario at second base to cover the gap.

Lombard has been an everyday presence since his Aug. 4 promotion, playing every inning of 23 games. The Yankees' refusal to trade him at the deadline underscores his organizational value. His .253 average with two home runs and seven errors reflects a promising but developing rookie campaign now clouded by this knee concern.
