Phillies revamp farm system leadership to sharpen focus

Philadelphia is splitting the player development director role, promoting Luke Murton to assistant GM for hitting while seeking a dedicated director of player development. President Dave Dombrowski said the change aims to give the farm system full-time oversight, as Murton had been juggling multiple responsibilities. The club will also maintain separate pitching development directors under pitching coach Caleb Cotham.

The restructuring follows a meeting Dombrowski convened last week at Citizens Bank Park with roughly ten team officials, where the organization's future direction was discussed. Dombrowski noted the conversation had been building gradually over the season rather than emerging from a single moment of crisis. Murton's expanded title reflects the growing complexity of hitting instruction, which Dombrowski described as far more sophisticated than in past eras. The club previously overhauled its minor league approach before 2022 under Preston Mattingly, who implemented a blended development philosophy. The Phillies are currently in a win-now window with a thin farm system, making developmental efficiency a priority.
