Bentley's Torcal SUV Marks Its First Fully In-House Electric Vehicle
Bentley has announced the Torcal, an all-electric SUV designed for urban drivers and positioned at a premium price point. This marks the company's first fully electric car built entirely in-house, following earlier plug-in hybrids and a limited-edition electric recreation of a classic 1929 model. The launch underscores continued interest in the US EV market despite recent struggles among domestic manufacturers.
The Torcal leverages the Volkswagen Group's shared electric vehicle architecture, utilizing the same platform found in the Porsche Cayenne and incorporating elements from Audi. This positions the model as a smaller, city-focused alternative to the larger, gas-powered Bentayga SUV, with the company's dealer network already promoting its urban driving credentials ahead of the September 23 reveal.
This launch follows a gradual electrification path for the British marque. Since 2018, Bentley has offered plug-in hybrid versions of its vehicles, and in 2023 it endorsed the limited-edition Blower Jnr, a 15-kilowatt electric recreation of a 1929 classic. The Torcal, however, represents the company's first fully electric vehicle developed entirely in-house, marking a significant step beyond its previous collaborative and hybrid efforts.
The Torcal's premium positioning could signal that the high-end EV market remains resilient even as mainstream American manufacturers struggle with affordability.
