Indiana flood recovery blocked by political standoff and budget cuts
Record flooding in Indiana has damaged hundreds of homes and killed seven people, with more than a thousand displaced. In Cambridge City, a third of all houses were affected, and many residents lost everything. Recovery efforts are hampered because the president has not approved emergency aid and the state has reduced environmental agency funding.
The flooding struck on 12 August after roughly ten inches of rain fell by mid-morning, three times the town's typical August total. Water rose nearly five feet inside homes along Creitz Creek, a Whitewater River tributary, while a derecho knocked out power to hundreds of thousands in Gary, Indiana's only majority-Black city. A section of Interstate-70, a key east-west artery, was washed away north of Cambridge City.
Indiana's disaster relief fund held only $2 million before the event, since raised to $5 million. State environmental agency funding fell 19% between 2010 and 2024, while neighboring Ohio and Michigan increased theirs. Indiana remains one of 18 states without a climate action plan, and its senate environmental affairs committee has twice declined to consider a climate solutions taskforce.
This standoff could leave thousands of displaced residents in prolonged uncertainty, with housing, infrastructure repair, and economic recovery all delayed. Communities like Cambridge City, where a third of homes were damaged, may struggle to rebuild without federal assistance, while Gary's extended power outage highlights how vulnerable populations bear disproportionate burdens. The blocked aid and reduced environmental funding could also signal to other states that climate preparedness is politically expendable, potentially widening regional disparities in disaster resilience and recovery capacity.
