The survey leveraged existing seed-cleaning protocols, adding DNA-based pest detection to routine golden dodder testing at participating facilities. This approach allowed researchers to screen thousands of deliveries without disrupting commercial operations, revealing that the wasp's hidden larval feeding inside developing seeds only becomes apparent during mechanical cleaning, when infested seeds are discarded alongside impurities.
Pest pressure varied sharply across the landscape, with a small fraction of fields accounting for a disproportionate share of damage. Infestation levels climbed steadily through the January-to-April maturation window, suggesting that later-maturing crops face prolonged exposure to growing wasp populations. Researchers suggest shifting the seed-production phase earlier, to November, as a potential risk-reduction strategy, though they caution it is not a guaranteed control measure.
