Musk's Budget Cuts Linked to Nepal Flood Vulnerability, Critics Say

Social media and former USAID officials are questioning whether Elon Musk's DOGE budget cuts undermined disaster monitoring in Nepal, potentially worsening the flood impact. The terminated USAID-NASA collaboration focused on flood prediction, early warning systems, glacier inventories, and mapping hazardous glacial lakes in Nepal. Former USAID chief Jeremy Konyndyk noted that DOGE eliminated seven additional disaster risk reduction projects in the country, alongside $420 million in NASA climate work terminated through keyword searches for terms like "climate."

Konyndyk acknowledged that even with these programs intact, the glacial flood may have been an unpredictable outlier. However, he stressed that anticipating and mitigating climate hazards becomes impossible when ideology denies their existence.
