Ampere GPUs struggle with DLSS 5 mod, frame rates plummet

A leaked DLSS 5 DLL has been patched to run on Nvidia's RTX 30-series (Ampere) GPUs, but performance is severely compromised. Most games drop to single-digit frame rates, with high-end cards reaching only 30-40 FPS under optimal conditions and with reduced in-game settings. The mod also introduces significant latency, multiplying frame times by up to ten in worst-case scenarios.
The DLSS 5 DLL surfaced through an early-access build of NBA 2K27, and modders in the RenoDX Discord server progressively unlocked it for older GPU generations. On Ampere cards, the neural rendering pipeline demands far more compute than the architecture can supply, forcing users to drastically lower resolution and in-game settings just to approach playable frame rates. Reported results vary widely, from roughly 40 FPS in Dying Light 2 on an RTX 3080 to as low as 2 FPS in Hogwarts Legacy on an RTX 3070. Even the best case observed, 41 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, required dropping to 720p with the ultra performance upscaling preset. Frame pacing suffers severely, with worst-case latency multiplying by up to tenfold.
This mod could reshape how gamers view generational hardware upgrades, as it demonstrates that software-driven features like DLSS 5 are deeply tied to newer GPU architectures. Owners of RTX 30-series cards may feel pressure to upgrade, while developers and Nvidia could face questions about artificially limiting features to newer hardware. The poor performance may also temper enthusiasm for neural rendering among budget-conscious users, potentially slowing adoption of AI-enhanced graphics in the broader gaming community.
