SpaceX foundry aims to cut gas turbine lead times for AI power, but pollution concerns loom

Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX is building a foundry in Bastrop, Texas, to cast turbine blades for natural gas generators, potentially accelerating deployment by up to 18 months. This move addresses a bottleneck in gas turbine production that has constrained power supply for AI data centers, which are expected to double electricity use by 2030. However, the reliance on natural gas has already sparked lawsuits and health studies in areas where such turbines operate.
The foundry’s output targets turbine blades that must be grown as single crystals in vacuum furnaces, a process only four firms worldwide have mastered at industrial scale. SpaceX’s Bastrop site spans roughly 830 acres near its existing Starlink factory, with job listings confirming the “blades and vanes” focus. Musk frames the move as a stopgap: solar capacity is being built, but gas will “bootstrap” power for several years. The bottleneck has already pushed GE Vernova to sell out its production capacity through 2030, driven largely by AI data center demand.
This could reshape AI infrastructure competition, giving Musk’s ventures a rare manufacturing lever over rivals dependent on a four-company oligopoly. Faster turbine deployment may ease power shortages for data centers, but communities near new plants could face increased air pollution, as seen in Memphis lawsuits. The trade-off between AI growth and environmental health may become more acute, affecting local residents and regulators who must weigh economic acceleration against documented health risks.
