Flash flood in Grand Canyon triggers search for 15 missing individuals

A flash flood in the Grand Canyon on Saturday left approximately 15 people unaccounted for, according to the National Park Service. The flood damaged infrastructure in Bright Angel Canyon, including footbridges, and forced closures of popular trails and facilities. By Sunday morning, 62 individuals had been evacuated, with no reported injuries.

The flood struck Saturday afternoon in Bright Angel Canyon, destroying nearly all footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek and cutting off hiker access between trail segments. Closures now cover the Black and Silver bridges over the Colorado River, Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the Phantom Ranch Canteen and cabins, and the full North Kaibab Trail from its trailhead down to Phantom Ranch.

Evacuation efforts have moved 62 people from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab trail, with additional evacuations scheduled from Cottonwood Campground. One hiker described the creek turning black with debris and flowing rapidly. The park has suspended overnight lodging at all concessions while keeping the park open for day use, and is asking the public for tips on anyone who may have been in the affected corridor.
