Coral reefs face irreversible loss as bleaching events become more frequent
A new report from the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network warns that coral reef coverage is at risk of irreversible decline due to increasingly frequent bleaching events. The 2023 bleaching affected 77% of the world's reefs, and scientists say another event is very likely this year. The report also notes that at least five Pacific Islands Forum leaders will skip the upcoming summit.
The report highlights a sharp decline in global coral cover since 2010, following decades of relative stability. Bleaching events now occur roughly twice as often as before, leaving reefs insufficient time to recover between episodes. The 2023 event was the worst recorded, affecting over three-quarters of reef areas worldwide, and scientists anticipate a similar event this year due to sustained ocean heat.
Coral reefs, though covering less than 1 percent of the seafloor, support more than a quarter of marine species. Their loss threatens biodiversity and coastal economies. Separately, the Pacific Islands Forum faces reduced attendance, with at least five leaders skipping the summit, underscoring regional strain over climate and ocean issues.
This warning could affect coastal communities, fisheries, and tourism industries that depend on reef health. More frequent bleaching may accelerate food insecurity and economic instability in Pacific and tropical regions. The report’s timing, alongside the forum’s attendance gaps, may signal growing pressure on governments to act, though concrete policy responses remain uncertain.
