Omega-3 and aspirin match antibiotics for severe periodontitis

The year-long trial enrolled 109 participants with advanced periodontitis, all of whom received standard scaling to remove bacterial deposits below the gumline. Patients were divided into four groups: a placebo control, a two-week course of metronidazole and amoxicillin, a six-month regimen of three grams of omega-3 plus daily low-dose aspirin, or a combination of both treatments.
At the twelve-month mark, roughly 58% of patients in both the antibiotic group and the omega-3/aspirin group achieved the study's target of having no more than four remaining deep periodontal pockets. The research involved collaboration between Brazilian institutions and Harvard University, with findings published in the Journal of Periodontology and funding from FAPESP.
This finding could offer dentists a viable alternative for patients who cannot tolerate antibiotics or who carry resistant bacterial strains. If replicated in larger trials, it may reduce antibiotic prescriptions in periodontal care, potentially slowing the spread of antimicrobial resistance. However, the study's modest sample size means clinical guidelines are unlikely to shift immediately. Patients with severe gum disease could eventually benefit from a simpler, lower-risk option, though individual responses to the supplement regimen may vary.
