Nepal scrambles to free hundreds of hydropower workers buried by glacial flood debris
Rescue teams in Nepal, supported by Chinese and Indian experts, are working to reach more than 900 workers trapped in tunnels of hydropower projects blocked by mud and rocks after a glacier collapse triggered flash floods. The disaster has killed at least 903 people in Nepal and left over 4,200 missing, with hundreds of bodies buried in shallow graves as morgues overflow. Officials say clearing the heavy debris from the tunnels remains the main challenge, while families continue searching for loved ones in hospitals and makeshift burial sites.
Rescue crews are using heavy machinery and torchlights to dig through massive deposits of mud and rock blocking the entrances to roughly a dozen hydropower tunnels. The army spokesperson noted that clearing this debris is the primary obstacle, while soldiers have also deployed life-detection equipment in the search. Beyond the 933 missing hydropower workers, about 500 truck and container association workers are unaccounted for. The Red Cross estimates over 90,000 people may be affected, and nearly 40 kilometers of roads have been completely washed away, complicating aid delivery. China has mobilized over 2,100 rescuers and allocated $33 million, with supplies airdropped to frontline teams.
This disaster could strain Nepal’s already limited emergency infrastructure, as overflowing morgues and shallow graves reflect the scale of human loss. Families may face prolonged uncertainty over missing relatives, while the trapped workers’ fate could disrupt energy projects and local livelihoods. The international response, including Chinese and Indian expertise, may shape regional cooperation on disaster management, but the long-term recovery for affected communities—especially those isolated by destroyed roads—could take years.
