Meta's Pocket app turns AI prompts into playable games, but keeps them locked in its own ecosystem

Meta's new Pocket app, launched after acquiring the team behind the vibe-coding tool Gizmo, lets users create interactive games by typing prompts into a mobile text box, with no code visible. The resulting games can be shared in a TikTok-style feed with likes and comments, but they cannot be exported or used outside Meta's platform. Ars Technica's hands-on testing found the tool easy and addictive, yet the creations remain trapped within Meta's walled garden.
Pocket launched in the US on August 21, following Meta's March acquisition of the team behind the defunct vibe-coding app Gizmo. The mobile app requires no coding knowledge—users type prompts into a text box, and the AI generates playable interactive "gizmos" after roughly two minutes of processing. Ars Technica's Kyle Orland tested the app extensively, submitting over 100 prompts to refine a sling-shot game concept, adding features like marching robots, ammo systems, and score counters that the AI suggested unprompted.
The resulting creations are shared through a TikTok-style feed with likes, comments, and reposts, but cannot be exported or used outside Meta's platform. Orland described the process as easy and addictive, though he noted the games remain effectively trapped within Meta's walled garden ecosystem.
This launch could significantly lower the barrier to game creation, potentially drawing casual users into interactive design who would never attempt traditional coding. However, the closed ecosystem means creators may find their work locked to Meta's platform, limiting portability and long-term ownership. The social-media-style sharing model could also normalize AI-generated content as disposable entertainment, affecting how users value creative labor and potentially concentrating creative tooling power within a single corporate platform.
