Logistics chief says practical robot dexterity beats flashy humanoid feats

GXO Logistics CEO Patrick Kelleher argues that humanoid robots with advanced hand dexterity are more valuable to warehouse operations than those with athletic abilities like sprinting or jumping. The company is piloting five humanoid-robotics systems, focusing on mimicking human hand movements to improve productivity and address a 25% labor turnover rate. Kelleher sees these robots as supplements to the existing 150,000-person workforce, not replacements.
The distinction between industrial robots and humanoids lies in degrees of freedom—the range of movements a machine can execute. Standard industrial units typically manage four to six motions, while modern humanoids exceed one hundred, approaching the roughly two hundred movements the human body performs. GXO's pilots span both bipedal walking models and wheeled-base variants, with additional European trials slated before year's end.
Beyond hand articulation, the company is testing autonomous forklifts and humanoids engineered for extreme cold storage environments reaching minus 32 degrees. Kelleher frames these efforts as addressing persistent labor shortages rather than workforce reduction, noting the industry's 25 percent annual turnover rate. The experiments position GXO's facilities as a proving ground for human-machine collaboration models.
