Chinese memory maker CXMT claims first LPDDR6 production, targets Xiaomi flagship

ChangXin Memory Technologies announced it has begun mass-producing LPDDR6 memory for a Xiaomi smartphone, according to a social media post cited by Reuters. The move places the Chinese firm roughly on par with established DRAM leaders like Samsung and SK Hynix, though the announcement covers only a single phone model. LPDDR6 introduces PAM3 signaling and faster data rates up to 43.2 GT/s, requiring hardware and software redesigns.
LPDDR6 represents a significant architectural departure from its predecessor, employing PAM3 signaling to encode three bits across two symbols rather than the NRZ scheme used by LPDDR5/LPDDR5X. The standard also doubles peak data rates to 43.2 GT/s while narrowing the I/O width from 32 to 24 bits, forcing both hardware and software redesigns for adopting devices.
CXMT's announcement follows its LPDDR5 mass production by less than a year, a notably compressed generational cycle. However, the claim covers only a single Xiaomi model with undisclosed performance specifications, leaving questions about yield rates, validation across other devices, and whether the company can sustain production volumes comparable to Samsung, SK Hynix, or Micron.
This development could reshape the global memory supply landscape, as a credible third-tier DRAM producer entering at the standard's launch may increase competition and potentially moderate pricing for consumer electronics. Smartphone manufacturers beyond Xiaomi could gain alternative sourcing options, while established suppliers might face pressure on margins.
