AI-Generated TikTok Videos Promote Nonexistent Hotel Amenities

TikTok's new booking feature is being flooded with AI-generated videos that advertise hotels with fabricated details, such as nonexistent suites and ponds. Property owners like Jennifer May of Ambiente Sedona say the content misleads travelers and may earn commissions for fake influencers. The videos have garnered hundreds of thousands of views, raising concerns about the platform's verification.
The rise of AI-generated hotel content on TikTok Go has exposed a verification gap that property owners say they cannot close. Jennifer May, who operates Ambiente Sedona, identified multiple fabricated features in viral videos, including atrium suites and a pond that do not exist on her property. Detection firm Resemble.AI assessed one featured creator as AI-generated with 99.8% confidence, yet the video accumulated over 315,000 views before any intervention.
The commission structure of TikTok's booking feature incentivizes these deceptive posts, as accounts earn percentage-based payouts for each reservation generated. With no apparent mechanism for property owners to flag or remove inaccurate content, the platform's rapid growth in travel booking appears to be outpacing its safeguards against synthetic media.
The spread of AI-generated travel content could erode consumer trust in social media booking platforms, particularly among travelers who rely on video reviews to make purchase decisions. Hotels may face reputational damage from amenities they never offered, while legitimate creators could be displaced by synthetic influencers. If unaddressed, this pattern may push travelers toward established booking sites, potentially slowing TikTok's expansion into the travel sector.
