Honor's gimbal-integrated smartphone shows potential despite limited release
Honor's Robot Phone integrates a tiny three-axis gimbal into its chassis, offering stabilization for a 200-megapixel main camera without external accessories. The device is thicker than typical phones at 9.6mm and is currently sold only in China as a limited production run. The gimbal motor, weighing just 2.6 grams, folds away behind a cover and can also be used for selfies.
The Robot Phone's gimbal motor weighs just 2.6 grams, a custom component Honor manufactured specifically to fit inside a handset chassis. That engineering constraint pushes the device to 9.6mm thickness, noticeably bulkier than mainstream flagships. The phone pairs its stabilized 200MP main sensor with a 200MP telephoto offering 2.7x optical zoom and a 50MP ultra-wide with a 122-degree field of view.
Honor revealed the device at MWC 2026, positioning it as an experimental product with a limited China-only production run, similar to Samsung's approach with the Galaxy Z TriFold. The company partnered with ARRI on video features, including LogC3 capture and preview LUTs. The gimbal arm unfolds manually via a sliding cover, and the same sensor doubles as a selfie camera, recalling the Galaxy A80's rotating module design.
This device could signal a shift in how smartphone manufacturers approach stabilization, potentially pushing competitors to explore integrated mechanical solutions rather than external accessories. Content creators and mobile videographers may benefit most, gaining gimbal-quality footage without carrying extra gear. However, the limited China-only release and thicker chassis may temper mainstream adoption, leaving this as a niche experiment that could influence future flagship designs if production costs become viable.
