YouTuber Markiplier takes largest stake in GoPro

YouTube star Mark 'Markiplier' Fischbach has acquired an 8.5% stake in GoPro, making him the company's largest shareholder. He told Bloomberg he believes the camera maker is undervalued and sees the investment as part of a mission to democratize filmmaking. Fischbach recently promoted GoPro's new Mission 1 ILS camera in a video.
Fischbach's 8.5 percent stake surpasses all other individual shareholders at the action camera maker, a position he acquired quietly before publicly discussing it with Bloomberg. His promotional video for the Mission 1 ILS compared the device favorably against the Red Komodo-X, a professional cinema camera costing several times more, and he stated intentions to use the GoPro model in future productions. The video carried an affiliate purchase code but disclosed no ownership interest.
The investment arrives months after the release of Iron Lung, Fischbach's debut feature film, which he has cited as inspiration for wanting broader access to professional-grade filmmaking tools. Fellow creator Marques Brownlee publicly questioned the arrangement on Threads, noting such entanglements are rarely seen in the industry. GoPro has not commented on the development.
This arrangement could reshape how audiences interpret creator endorsements, as viewers may struggle to distinguish genuine recommendations from financially motivated promotion. Other influencers might follow suit, acquiring stakes in brands they feature, which could blur ethical lines in tech journalism and reviews. At the same time, Fischbach's involvement may boost GoPro's visibility among younger consumers and
