91-year-old hiker completes Appalachian Trail, setting age record
Dale Sanders, 91, finished the 2,193-mile Appalachian Trail on Monday, becoming the oldest person to complete the thru-hike. He fell 71 times during the journey, including a fall that required hospitalization. Sanders had previously held the record in 2017 but was surpassed by a friend in 2021.
Sanders, whose trail name is Grey Beard, began his attempt on September 6, 2025, in West Virginia and finished atop Mount Katahdin in Maine. His journey included a June fall on Killington Mountain in Vermont that left him scraped but unbroken, and a later pinched nerve that briefly hospitalized him in Maine. He nearly quit in early August but was persuaded by his wife to continue after they returned home to Tennessee following her mother's death.
Born in Kentucky in 1935, two years before the trail's completion, Sanders overcame childhood bullying through acrobatics and swimming. He served in the navy and retired in 2002 from a parks and recreation career. He first set the record in 2017 at age 82, then lost it in 2021 to friend MJ Eberhart, whose trail name is Nimblewill Nomad.
Sanders' achievement may inspire older adults to reconsider their physical limits, potentially boosting participation in long-distance hiking among seniors.
