Pentagon's Army Secretary Resigns Following Months of Internal Conflict

Dan Driscoll has resigned as US army secretary, according to the White House. His departure follows reported tensions with defense secretary Pete Hegseth and a period of upheaval at the Pentagon. Driscoll had been second in line to Hegseth and was a close ally of the ousted army chief of staff Randy George.

Driscoll's exit follows a turbulent stretch at the Pentagon that saw the April removal of army chief of staff Randy George and the June departure of Gen Christopher Donahue, who commanded US forces in Europe and Africa. Driscoll had publicly defended George, describing a personal visit to his home after the ouster.

Before his confirmation in February 2025, Driscoll built a career spanning military service in Iraq, technology investing, and advising JD Vance, whom he met at Yale Law School. As army secretary, he took on the unusual assignment of mediating between Russia and Ukraine while pushing to streamline military contracting for drone development.
