EMCC dismisses five-time champion coach Buddy Stephens after public criticism

Stephens compiled a 155-31 record across 18 seasons, capturing national titles in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, and 2018, along with nine conference championships. His 2024 induction into the NJCAA Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame capped a tenure that made EMCC a notable pipeline to major college football, producing NFL talents such as Jarran Reed, Za'Darius Smith, and Dakota Allen.
The dismissal followed Stephens' pointed criticism of MACCC changes that added a regular-season game and altered playoff seeding to two teams per division. His "idiots" comment in a newspaper interview drew a swift rebuke from EMCC president Scott Alsobrooks, who cited the college's standards of professionalism and civility. The school's announcement did not name Stephens, and his employment status beyond coaching remains unclear.
