Global report shows Australian coral cover down, but still above average
A new global assessment finds that average hard coral cover worldwide fell 9.5% from the 1980-2009 baseline. Australian reefs have also declined over four decades but remain relatively healthy compared to other regions. The report notes that recovery is possible, though recent bleaching events have reversed gains.
The GCRMN assessment, the seventh of its kind, spans ten geographic regions and represents the most extensive coral reef health survey to date. Only four of those regions recorded declines in hard coral cover, yet the global average still fell nearly ten percent below the 1980–2009 benchmark. Australia's drop from 30.2% to 26.8% cover closely mirrors that worldwide trajectory.
Recovery patterns vary sharply by location. Scott Reef off Western Australia rebounded after the 2016 bleaching event, while reefs in the Southern Great Barrier Reef and the Pilbara have fared worse. The report also notes that bleaching events now arrive every five to six years, roughly half the historical interval, leaving reefs less time to regenerate between disturbances.
This report could influence how governments, tourism operators, and coastal communities prioritize reef management and climate adaptation funding. Regions dependent on reef-related tourism and fisheries may face economic uncertainty if declines continue, while marine scientists and conservation groups may use the data to press for stronger emissions reductions. The finding that recovery remains possible, though increasingly fragile, could shape public expectations about whether intervention efforts are worthwhile or whether more drastic measures are needed.
