Dyson has introduced the CameraJet, a $499 electric toothbrush with an integrated flosser that uses a tiny camera to detect gaps between teeth and shoot rinsing fluid. The device analyzes 28 images per second and relies on a machine learning algorithm trained on 470,000 dental images to flush plaque with a conical jet. The company developed a proxy plaque with the National University of Singapore to test the brush's effectiveness without lengthy clinical trials.
The CameraJet emerged from six years of Dyson research, pairing a macro-lens endoscope with a machine learning model trained on roughly 470,000 dental images. Its optical targeting system captures 28 frames per second, and the complete detection-to-flush sequence fires within 100 milliseconds. The conical fluid jet is designed to clear plaque across a broader surface area than the needle-style streams used by competing water flossers, while requiring less pressure.
Dyson collaborated with the National University of Singapore's dentistry faculty to develop a synthetic plaque substitute, enabling rapid laboratory iteration without conducting clinical trials after each design change. The device holds 12.5 milliliters of alcohol-free rinse, replenished automatically by a docking station in three seconds. An RFID tag embedded in the brush head tracks cleaning cycles to signal replacement, and variable sonic oscillation adjusts bristle angle to maintain effectiveness under pressure.
