Week 1 West Virginia High School Football Player of the Week Nominees Unveiled

Twelve candidates are in the running for the West Virginia High School Football Player of the Week for Week 1, including Independence's Pax Myers, South Charleston's Malakhi Hope, and Roane County's Evan Greathouse. Myers totaled 101 rushing yards and two touchdowns plus 107 receiving yards, Hope rushed for 147 yards and three scores, and Greathouse recorded 10 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Voting remains open until Sept. 6 at 11:59 p.m. PT.

The weekly recognition program highlights standout performances across all positions, from quarterbacks like Eli Pauley and Bradyn Waldron to defensive standouts such as Talen Brown and Aaron Hood. Several nominees contributed on both sides of the ball, including Gavin Williams, who added an interception and forced fumble to his rushing totals. Bridgeport placed two players on the list, reflecting a dominant 68-0 team victory.

Voting remains open through Sept. 6 at 11:59 p.m. PT, with the winner announced in next week's poll. Organizers emphasize the poll is a community-building exercise rather than a formal competition, noting no prizes are awarded and the purpose is to celebrate athletic achievement across West Virginia's high school programs.
