GoPro merges with Starman Optical to enter AI infrastructure and defense markets

GoPro will merge with optical-photonics firm Starman Optical, receiving $285 million in cash while retaining about 10% ownership of the combined company. The deal, expected to close by end of 2026, will let GoPro expand into AI data center transceivers, defense, robotics, and aerospace. GoPro will continue its action camera business alongside these new ventures.
The merger structure gives GoPro shareholders a cash payout while the company retains a minority stake in the combined entity, with its existing debt also settled. Completion hinges on shareholder votes and regulatory clearance, with a target closing date in late 2026. GoPro’s core camera business and subscription services will continue operating alongside the new ventures.
This pivot mirrors a broader trend of consumer brands diversifying into AI infrastructure, as seen with Allbirds. Starman’s optical transceiver technology will anchor GoPro’s entry into data center hardware, while its imaging and optics patents could support defense and aerospace applications. Separately, YouTuber Markiplier’s recent 8.5% stake purchase has provided a short-term boost to the struggling stock, which once peaked at a $4 billion valuation.
This merger could reshape GoPro’s identity
