Google launches AI-driven design tool Pics for Workspace users

Google introduced Google Pics, an AI-powered image creation and editing tool integrated into Workspace, targeting business and premium AI subscribers. Unlike Canva or Adobe Express, it relies on prompt-based generation rather than manual design or marketplace templates. The tool will initially appear in Docs and Slides, with Drive support planned later.
Google Pics is powered by the company's Nano Banana image-generation model and will reach most Workspace business customers plus Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers over the coming weeks. The tool's editing capabilities include isolating and transforming objects, modifying or translating text within images, collaborative editing, and generating multiple image variations so users can select the best result.
The rollout begins with Docs and Slides integration today, with Drive support planned for a later release. Unlike Canva's marketplace model where artists earn royalties from published templates, or Adobe Express's from-scratch design approach, Pics operates purely through prompt-based AI generation. The article notes the underlying AI was trained on artists' work, though it does not detail compensation or licensing arrangements.
This tool could reshape how everyday business users approach visual content, potentially reducing reliance on professional designers for routine graphics. However, the AI's training on artists' work without clear compensation may intensify ongoing tensions between generative AI companies and creative professionals. It could also pressure Canva and Adobe Express to accelerate their own AI offerings, ultimately changing how design work is valued and credited across industries.
