Bailey Withdraws from Sondheim Revival, Leaving Production Without Its Leads

Jonathan Bailey has stepped away from the upcoming West End production of "Sunday in the Park with George," following Ariana Grande's earlier exit. The musical, inspired by a Georges Seurat painting, was set to feature the two actors as George and Dot. Bailey expressed support for Grande and his collaborators in a statement announcing his decision.

The production now faces the challenge of recasting both lead roles in a Pulitzer Prize-winning Sondheim musical. Bailey and Grande had been announced as the marquee attraction, with previews scheduled for summer 2027. The musical dramatizes the creation of Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," exploring the painter's artistic struggles and his relationship with Dot.

Grande's exit came first, with her representatives citing exhaustion from public scrutiny and a need for a break from public-facing work. Bailey's statement emphasized his friendship with Grande and his respect for the creative team, while expressing confidence in whoever will ultimately fill the roles. The original 1984 Broadway production won two Tony Awards and starred Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin.
