Pentagon Expands AI Access to Millions of Personnel via ChatGPT and Grok
The Pentagon is integrating ChatGPT and Grok into its secure GenAI.mil platform, giving up to 3 million military and civilian employees access to the AI tools. The rollout follows defense contracts of up to $200 million each for OpenAI and SpaceXAI. The specialized versions will process unclassified information without using data for model training.
The GenAI.mil platform, launched in December, initially provided only a specialized version of Google's Gemini to the Department of War's workforce. The Pentagon has now expanded this to include tools from OpenAI and SpaceXAI, following contracts worth up to $200 million each, with additional agreements for Google and Anthropic. The platform currently serves 1.7 million of the department's 3 million personnel.
These specialized AI versions operate at Impact Level 5, handling Controlled Unclassified Information without using data for model training. The tools are designed for routine military work in human resources, logistics, and contracting, with Grok's version offering varying reasoning levels for tasks like market research and supply-chain management.
This expansion could significantly alter how military and civilian defense personnel handle routine administrative work, potentially increasing efficiency in document-heavy tasks. However, it may also raise concerns about data privacy and the growing role of private tech companies in government operations. The rapid rollout could create confusion among personnel unfamiliar with AI tools, as evidenced by the December launch, potentially affecting trust in official communications and the pace of adoption across the department.
