DreamWorks Remote Animators Approve First Union Agreement
Remote workers at DreamWorks Animation have ratified their first union contract with The Animation Guild, with 97% approval. The deal provides parity in wages, benefits, and protections with L.A.-based staff. The bargaining unit includes story artists, animators, and technical directors.
The ratification vote, which closed August 21, saw 97 percent approval among 108 eligible voters, with turnout at 83.3 percent. The contract extends the same minimum wage rates, workplace protections, and health and retirement benefits that L.A.-based staff receive under the guild's Master Agreement, and any future renegotiated changes will automatically apply to remote workers as well.
The remote bargaining unit encompasses a wide range of roles, including story artists, animators, character effects artists, technical directors, lighters, visual development artists, modelers, and production coordinators. The unionization effort became public in fall 2025, and a December NLRB election was won 52-10, followed by several months of contract negotiations.
This agreement could signal a broader shift in how entertainment industry labor protections adapt to remote work arrangements. As studios increasingly hire talent outside traditional production hubs, remote workers may gain greater leverage in securing equitable treatment, potentially influencing how other animation and media companies structure their own remote labor policies. The outcome could also encourage more geographically dispersed creative professionals to pursue collective bargaining.
