Former Warriors executives file suit claiming bias and retaliation
Lisa Shelley and Jennifer Vasquez, former Golden State Warriors officials, have filed a lawsuit in San Francisco County Superior Court alleging discrimination, harassment, and retaliation tied to their dismissals. The suit claims the workplace was hostile and seeks damages plus injunctive relief. Shelley also alleges the Warriors made false statements that cost her a job offer from the LA Clippers.
Shelley joined the Warriors in 2021 as associate general counsel and director of business and legal affairs, while Vasquez arrived in January 2022 as vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion. The lawsuit alleges Shelley was repeatedly denied promotions despite generating over $4 million in corporate partnerships and being named employee of the month, with younger male colleagues advanced ahead of her. Vasquez claims her ideas were dismissed within her first month and that she was mocked for her age during a team meeting.
The suit also details a promotion process requiring candidate photographs shown to senior leadership during closed voting, with subjective criteria like "likability" allegedly masking appearance-based judgments. Shelley further contends the Warriors sabotaged a conditional job offer from the LA Clippers in June by making false statements during a reference check. The franchise has denied all allegations, stating they were previously investigated and found meritless.
