Postal worker alleges rushed federal ballot portal risks blocking millions of mail-in votes

An anonymous USPS official has warned that a new ballot-processing system, ordered by President Trump and set to launch Tuesday, could prevent millions of Americans from receiving mail ballots for the November midterms. The whistleblower claims the system was built with insufficient testing and a zero-percent failure policy, meaning a single barcode error could halt an entire batch of ballots. The disclosure, released by Senator Richard Blumenthal, describes the project as secretive, chaotic, and fundamentally flawed.

The proposed system would require state election officials to upload voter lists and barcode data to a federal portal before postal workers accept outgoing ballot batches. Under the zero-tolerance verification policy, a single failed scan in a sampled group could delay thousands of ballots until the discrepancy is resolved and the entire batch rechecked.

The whistleblower, represented by Whistleblower Aid, said the project received minimal testing compared with standard IT requirements and faced constantly shifting specifications. USPS maintains the portal is lawful and initially voluntary, while Senator Blumenthal has urged Postmaster General David Steiner to abandon the plan, noting roughly one-third of voters use mail ballots.
