US Grid Storage Installations Hit Record 20.2 GWh in Q2, Doubling Capacity Since 2025

The U.S. energy storage industry installed a record 20.2 gigawatt-hours in the second quarter of 2026, bringing first-half totals to 30.8 GWh, according to a new SEIA and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence report. Utility-scale storage capacity has nearly doubled to 165 GWh over the past 18 months, driven by grid reliability needs and rising electricity demand. The report raises its 2030 forecast by 11.5% to 683 GWh, with Arizona leading all states at 6.2 GWh installed in Q2.
The Q2 surge was driven overwhelmingly by utility-scale projects, which accounted for 17.9 of the 20.2 GWh installed, while commercial, industrial, and residential systems added smaller shares. Domestic manufacturing also reached new highs, with new battery cell plants opening in Ohio and Tennessee and a 50 GWh module facility in Texas, reducing reliance on imported components.
Arizona’s record 6.2 GWh quarter reflects a broader geographic shift beyond traditional leaders California and Texas. States including Nevada, Oregon, and Colorado now show strong pipeline growth, as storage increasingly pairs with solar to manage peak demand and grid stress during extreme heat events.
This rapid storage expansion could reshape electricity markets by lowering price volatility during peak demand, benefiting consumers in heat-prone regions. It may also accelerate coal and gas plant retirements, affecting energy-sector workers and communities dependent on those jobs. However, the concentration of installations in politically supportive states suggests growth could remain sensitive to federal policy shifts, though state-level reliability needs may sustain momentum regardless.
