Iowa High School Football Team Forfeits Week 2 Game Over Player Shortage
Meskwaki Settlement canceled its Friday football game against Gladbrook-Reinbeck because of low player numbers and injury concerns. The Warriors have lost 33 straight games since 2020, including a 64-14 defeat in their opener. Gladbrook-Reinbeck will receive a forfeit victory and will not replace the game.
The cancellation marks the first in-season forfeiture for Iowa's eight-player football ranks this year, following a wave of preseason program shutdowns that included Exira-EHK, Lone Tree, Mormon Trail, Rockford, and Siouxland Christian. Meskwaki Settlement's struggles have been pronounced, with the program's last victory coming in October 2020 against Twin Cedars, a stretch of 33 consecutive losses.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck, ranked sixth in the state's eight-player poll, will take the forfeit win but was unable to secure a replacement opponent despite contacting multiple schools with open dates. The Rebels now face an extended break before their next scheduled contest on September 10 against Colo-Nesco. Meskwaki Settlement is next slated to play September 11 at Collins-Maxwell, though no assurances were given about future games.
This forfeiture highlights the growing participation crisis affecting small-school football programs across rural Iowa, where declining enrollment and injury attrition can quickly make fielding a team untenable.
