New British pub The Boar opens in Central Hong Kong with authentic touches

Matt Richardson, founder of Big Top Hospitality, is opening The Boar, a British pub and restaurant in Central, Hong Kong. He plans to travel to Dublin to perfect the Guinness pour. The pub's name pays homage to boars found in both Hong Kong and the UK.
Richardson's Big Top Hospitality already operates five dining concepts across Hong Kong, including Bourke's, Honky Tonks Tavern, and Terracotta Lamma. The Boar marks his first venture rooted in British culture, with the name referencing wild boars native to both Hong Kong's hills and the UK countryside.
The kitchen is led by two chefs with notable fine-dining credentials. Executive chef Graham Long previously worked in Michelin-rated London kitchens and developed concepts for Hong Kong luxury hotels, while head chef Jake Bennett trained at Simon Rogan establishments, including three-Michelin-star L'Enclume in the Lake District. The opening comes as British pubs in Hong Kong have declined significantly over the past decade.
This opening could signal renewed interest in traditional British hospitality within Hong Kong's competitive dining scene. The pub may appeal to both expatriates seeking familiar comforts and locals curious about authentic cultural experiences. Its success could encourage similar ventures, potentially reversing the recent decline of British pubs in the city. However, its impact depends on factors like pricing, location, and whether the authenticity-focused approach resonates with contemporary Hong Kong drinkers and diners.
