Balogun Backs Out of Everton Transfer at Deadline

Folarin Balogun's anticipated $50 million-plus transfer from Monaco to Everton fell through in the final hours of the summer window, according to European reports. The U.S. men's national team striker decided against the move after the deal was renegotiated, despite having permission to undergo a medical. Balogun, who scored three goals at the 2026 World Cup, will remain with Monaco for now.

Balogun's decision came after Everton submitted a Premier League deal sheet to secure a deadline extension, with the two clubs having already agreed on a transfer fee and personal terms. The holdup reportedly stemmed from Everton needing to complete the sale of Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City first; that deal went through, but Balogun's did not. Everton had also sent veteran forward Beto to Fiorentina on Tuesday, leaving the club short-handed in attack.

The 25-year-old forward's stock rose significantly after scoring three goals in four World Cup matches, including the winner against Bosnia and Herzegovina. His tournament was marked by controversy when President Trump asked FIFA to review a red card that would have sidelined him against Belgium; FIFA suspended the ban, though the U.S. lost 4-1. Balogun previously made 10 first-team appearances for Arsenal and has scored 29 goals in 85 Ligue 1 and Champions League matches for Monaco.
