Eyeless 'Stranger Things' fish found in Alabama cave after decades of oversight
A previously unknown species of cave fish, named for the Demogorgon from 'Stranger Things,' was discovered in Bobcat Cave on a restricted military installation in Alabama. The fish, which is eyeless and ghostly white, was found by accident during a routine survey in February 2025. Genetic analysis indicates it is not closely related to the Southern cave fish already known in the same system, representing a new genus and species.
The discovery occurred during a February 2025 survey when Niemiller slipped in wet clay and plunged into a deep pool, bringing his headlamp face-to-face with the unfamiliar fish. Its pale, almost bluish appearance under artificial light distinguished it from the Southern cave fish sharing the same waters. Genetic testing revealed the two species evolved blindness independently through separate mutations, suggesting they colonized the underground system via different ancestral routes. The cave sits within a restricted military installation that also contains Cold War-era decommissioned nerve gas stores, and has been monitored monthly since the early 1990s due to its endangered Alabama cave shrimp population.
This finding could reshape how biologists understand subterranean biodiversity and species coexistence, suggesting that even heavily surveyed cave systems may harbor undocumented life. For conservation planning, it may signal that protected habitats require broader genetic screening rather than visual surveys alone.
