Streep and Poitras Back Documentary on Russian Journalists in Exile
Meryl Streep and Laura Poitras have signed on as executive producers for Julia Loktev's documentary sequel about Russian journalists in exile. The film tracks reporters who fled Moscow after being declared foreign agents, continuing their work across multiple countries. It will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
The documentary marks Loktev's second collaboration with editor Michael Taylor, who helped shape the sequel after the first installment earned top documentary honors from four major U.S. critics groups, including the Gotham Awards and the New York Film Critics Circle. Streep's involvement follows her pattern of supporting politically engaged nonfiction work, while Poitras brings her own experience documenting surveillance and state power from her Oscar-winning film Citizenfour.
Following its Venice premiere, the film is scheduled to screen at the New York Film Festival before a theatrical release and subsequent streaming debut on Mubi. Loktev shot the documentary herself using a cell phone camera, a stylistic choice that emerged from the urgency of her subjects' sudden departure from Moscow when independent media outlets were shuttered following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
