Take-Two CEO Expects High-Quality Game Streaming in Three Years, Cites GTA 6 as Benchmark
Take-Two's CEO stated that the video game industry will reach commercial streaming mode within three years. He argued that for streaming to be meaningful, it must run Grand Theft Auto 6 as well as consoles do.
The prediction emerged during a post-earnings investor Q&A, where Zelnick addressed the financial strain of escalating component costs. These hardware price hikes have already forced console makers to increase retail prices and may delay next-generation systems like the PlayStation 6 and Project Helix.
Zelnick argued that successful streaming could transform ordinary devices into gaming platforms, potentially multiplying the addressable audience tenfold. He noted that Microsoft has already begun testing ad-supported streaming, and he anticipates console manufacturers will integrate this technology into their future strategies.
If streaming reaches the fidelity and responsiveness of local hardware, it could democratize access to premium titles like GTA 6, allowing consumers without expensive consoles to participate. This may shift the industry's economic focus from hardware sales to subscription services, potentially lowering entry barriers for casual gamers. However, it could also deepen reliance on robust internet infrastructure, leaving regions with poor connectivity behind. The impact on console manufacturers' business models remains uncertain.
