BYD's Fully Electric Car Sales Surge in August, While Hybrid Growth Remains Weak

BYD sold 256,230 fully electric passenger vehicles in August, a 28.4% jump from a year earlier and a 9.9% increase from July. In contrast, its plug-in hybrid deliveries rose just 3% year-over-year to 177,154, while total passenger vehicle sales reached 433,384, up 16.7% annually. Despite the strong month, cumulative BEV sales for the first eight months remain 3.14% below the same period in 2025.
The August figures reveal a widening gap between BYD's two powertrain categories. While battery-electric deliveries surged to 256,230 units, plug-in hybrids managed only 177,154, a modest 3 percent annual gain. This divergence has persisted across 2026, with cumulative hybrid sales running 11.22 percent below last year's pace through August.
Despite the strong monthly performance, BYD's year-to-date totals remain in negative territory. The company has delivered 2,621,831 passenger vehicles across the first eight months, roughly 7 percent behind the same window in 2025. CleanTechnica's analysis suggests the company could still finish the year with overall growth, though the margin appears narrow.
The shift in BYD's sales mix could signal broader changes in consumer preferences within the electric vehicle market. If battery-electric demand continues outpacing hybrids, it may
